Turkey’s Place in Health Tourism

The movement of people between nations for specific objectives, including accommodation and travel is referred to as tourism. Nowadays, travelers are beginning to address their health-related issues in the nations where they travel for sightseeing, entertainment, eating, drinking, and accommodation. The concept of health tourism has emerged as a result of the mobility of people who seek treatment by traveling and staying outside of their place of residence.

Health tourism has reached a volume of 100 billion dollars in the world, attracting the attention of all countries. Due to the increase in the world population, the improvement in the quality of life, and the rise in healthcare costs in various countries, people are turning to countries where they can receive better quality and more affordable services.

According to the 2009 ranking of the world’s top 10 countries with the highest number of tourist arrivals and the highest tourism revenues, Turkey ranks 7th in the number of tourist arrivals and 9th in tourism revenues. Turkey is a country with competitive pricing practices especially in the field of medical tourism and has a price policy much lower than the dental treatment prices in Europe and America. In addition to its affordable prices, it offers patients treatment opportunities in a short time without waiting in line and a much more friendly service understanding than they encounter in their countries, resulting in high success in satisfaction rates.

According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute and the Central Bank, 103,400 foreign patients came to Turkey for treatment in 2003. These figures were recorded as 162,480 in 2008 and 132,680 in 2009.

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute 2011-2012 I. Period (January-March) statistics, the total amount of expenditure on health within tourism expenditures was 91,819,678 TL (3.0%) in 2011 and 100,917,425 TL (3.6%) in 2012.

As can be seen from the data, Turkey has achieved European standards in terms of technological infrastructure in health services, improved its service quality, and maintained its price policy, achieving increasing success in international patient demand and satisfaction.

IMPORTANT NOTE

If you have a panoramic x-ray taken in your country and send it to Turkey via e-mail or cargo, the treatments to be performed by examining your panoramic x-ray will be determined and the cost of the treatment will be notified to you.

After your approval, a mutual appointment date is set for the start. If you have your treatments such as fillings, tooth extractions, gum treatment and x-rays done in your home country, you will shorten the treatment time to be applied in Turkey. The treatment time for dental prosthesis is approximately one week. (If tooth extraction is required, it is better to have the tooth extraction done in your home country one and a half months in advance) For implants, the implants are placed at the first appointment. Approximately three to four months later, on your next visit, the superstructure of the implants will be made.
